Donna Blath are body sculptures and photos of a fictional artist “Donna Blath” living in a non-fictional realm.
She rises from the physical space of over-consumption. As humans watch our species kill off all other species, ourselves, and our livable planet; we are inundated with more possessions, devices, and literal garbage. Every material that one comes in contact with is a future fossil of our world. Our trash is our real culture and religion, our one truly lasting mark on earth. In the folk tradition of most human cultures, Donna makes mystical masks and suits to hide her physical form. These forms feel timeless, yet are clearly born of our current place. They are sacred yet are made entirely out of waste. From a meaningless world Donna creates meaning. She pushes us all to write a new ending to our story because the one that is currently being foretold is far too troubling to be true.
Donna Blath is Anna Bihari, Nicholas Maier, and Elizabeth Warn (costumes); and Jim Newberry (photos).
